BECOMING THE NURSE I WAS MEANT TO BE

My journey into Nursing,My Why, and My Hopes for the Future

👋 Hi, I’m
Amodu Firdaus – A Nursing Student on a Mission

If there’s one word that describes my journey so far, it’s purpose. I’m currently a student of Nursing, a course that isn’t just a career path for meit’s a calling. In this blog post, I want to share the heart behind my decision to study nursing, how the journey has shaped me so far, and where I see myself heading in the next few years.

💡 Why I Chose Nursing

Nursing, to me, is the perfect blend of science, empathy, and service. Growing up, I always admired the calm confidence of nurses the way they cared for patients with both skill and compassion. But beyond admiration, I wanted to be someone who makes people feel safe, especially in their most vulnerable moments.

There were many paths I could have taken, but nursing stood out. It offers the chance to be part of something larger than myself. It allows me to contribute meaningfully to the worldnot only by healing bodies, but by touching lives. That’s a privilege I don’t take for granted.

And then there’s this: I’ve always been fascinated by the human body. The way everything works in such harmony, and how delicate yet resilient life is. Nursing gave me a chance to explore this complexity while building real-world skills that can save lives.

📚 The Journey So Far: Studying Nursing

I’m currently in my second year (200 level), and the experience has been nothing short of eye-opening.

Nursing is not for the faint-hearted. It stretches you, mentally and emotionally. From early morning lectures and intense anatomy labs, to clinical practicals that teach you more than any textbook could it’s been a rollercoaster of growth. There are days when I feel confident and inspired. There are also days when I question myself, wonder if I’m good enough, or just feel overwhelmed.

But in all of it, one thing keeps me going:my why .

It’s not just about passing exams. It’s about becoming skilled, reliable, and trustworthy someone who can be counted on in moments that truly matter.

What I Plan to Do With My Degree

I don’t just want to be a nurseI want to be a great nurse. Someone who understands people, listens deeply, and offers care that brings comfort, not just cure. In the long run, I have a few dreams tied to this profession:

Become a Registered Nurse (RN) with strong clinical skills

That’s the first milestone. I want to be a nurse who is dependable in any clinical setting I whether it’s a general hospital, an emergency unit, or a rural community clinic. I want to be able to act quickly and accurately, especially when lives are on the line.

Advocate for Better Healthcare Access

Where I come from, I’ve seen first-hand how many people are denied quality care simply because of where they live or how little they earn. I want to be part of changing that. Maybe through community outreach, policy education, or public health campaigns I want to advocate for systems that work for everyone.

Pursue Further Education

Down the line, I see myself pursuing a Master’s in Nursing or Public Health. I want to deepen my knowledge, expand my options, and possibly take up roles in education or leadership.

🌱 What I Hope to Achieve in the Next Few Years

As I continue this journey, my focus is on becoming the best version of myself—both in the nursing profession and in life as a whole. Growth is a process, and over the next few years, I’m committed to embracing it fully.

I want to keep building strong academic and clinical foundations, improving my skills, and staying curious. I also hope to take advantage of every opportunity that helps me grow in confidence, compassion, and leadership qualities every great nurse needs.

Beyond the classroom and hospital walls, I aim to keep developing good habits, nurturing meaningful connections, and staying grounded in what truly matters to me. Life as a student can be demanding, but with discipline and purpose, I believe each season will shape me into someone who can make a real difference.

Choosing nursing has been one of the most challenging and rewarding decisions of my life. It’s a journey that requires everything your mind, heart, and strength. But it gives back even more.

In the next few years, I hope to look back and see how much I’ve grown not just in skill, but in character. I want to be someone my patients can trust, someone my colleagues respect, and someone my younger self would be proud of.

To everyone on their own path whether in nursing or another field never forget your why. That’s what will carry you through the long nights, the difficult exams, and the moments of doubt.
